The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, said the crash on Friday in Samawa Village, Kano State, was a tragic but avoidable incident.
Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, in a statement by FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, urged transport operators to prioritise vehicle maintenance and modern fleet renewal, noting that mechanical failures are a leading cause of road accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles.
In the crash on the Zaria-Kano Highway, a DAF trailer carrying goods and passengers resulted in twelve fatalities and five injuries among the 19 individuals involved.
“Preliminary investigations indicated that a broken cab hook was the cause of the loss of control. The injured are being treated at Kura General Hospital, while the deceased have been taken to Nasarawa Hospital mortuary,” he said.
Mohammed warned against the unsafe practice of mixing goods and passengers in the same vehicle, stating that stricter penalties will be enforced for such violations
