AKURE – No fewer than 30 persons died in a road accident along Ore/Lagos Expressway in Ondo State.

The incident confirmed by the state Sector Commander of Fed­eral Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, happened at Onipetesi along the highway in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

He disclosed that the incident occurred on Saturday when two commercial buses collided and ignited fire at 12:10 p.m.

According to Ibitoye, 28 among the occupants of the vehicles burnt to death beyond recognition on the spot while another two died on the way to the hospital.

But he said another two per­sons survived the accident and are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

Giving reasons for the accident, the FRSC commander disclosed that the preliminary investigation

of the commission revealed that the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the accident drove against the traffic.

On the update of the incident on Sunday, the sector commander disclosed that the two that were rushed to the hospital are current­ly responding to treatment.

He said, “The two other rescued victims are responding to medical treatment at Olaoluwa Medical Clinic, Onipetesi in Odigbo Local Government Area of the state.”

The remains of the 30 out of the 32 occupants of the vehicles who got burnt to death have been deposited at the General Hospital at Ore, Odigbo Local Government Area, Ondo State.

The two buses involved in the accident were owned by private transport organisations, GUO Transport Company and Flight Transport Company.

Sector Commander Ibitoye revealed that the driver of GUO Transport Company buses was coming from Lagos and drove against the traffic.

The other bus belonging to Flight Transport Company was coming from Gboko, Benue State, heading to Lagos.

The report of the FRSC reads, “Preliminary Investigation re­vealed that the two buses were speeding against the dictates of road traffic rules and regulations, while the GUO Transport Compa­ny bus coming from Lagos drove against the traffic to cause the ter­rible crash.

“The Flight Transport Compa­ny bus was coming from Gboko, Benue State on its way to Lagos.”

The Sector Commander, there­fore, charged motorists to obey traffic rules, while commuters should endeavour to caution drivers whenever they are going beyond the permitted speed limit or flouting the traffic rules.
