ABUJA – The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and the China Geo-Engineering Corporation Overseas Construction (CGCOC) Group for solar electrification and rural water supply.
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike signed the agreements in Beijing, China, alongside President Bola Tinubu’s delegation to the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) summit, with CCECC President Chen Sichang and CGCOC Chairman Lan Meizhong.
Wike, stated that the projects would be completed in time for the FCT’s 50th anniversary. CCECC will oversee areas including Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse, the Central Business Area, Airport Road, and Bill Clinton Drive, while CGCOC will manage Mabushi, Katampe, and Garki.
Regarding water supply, Wike noted that the Greater Abuja Water Works, managed by CGCOC, is 75% complete and expected to finish by December. He emphasized the need for water supply in satellite areas, stating that Tinubu directed efforts to focus on both urban and semi-urban locations. An MoU has been signed with CGC for water supply in Gwagwalada, Kwali, and Kuje.
The projects aim to advance FCT development, part of Tinubu’s agenda to restore hope for residents. Wike expressed a desire to illuminate Abuja, highlighting the importance of the project as the city approaches its 50th anniversary. He praised CCECC for its quality work, including the Abuja metroline, and thanked them for their contributions to the FCT and Nigeria.
He urged CGCOC to expedite project delivery and ensure water supply in satellite towns. The MoU signing was a key outcome of the recent summit in Beijing, attended by senior FCTA officials, including Permanent Secretary Alhaji Adamu Wanki and Executive Director of RUWASA Dr. Mohammed Dan Hassan.
In a similar development, the China Engineering and Machinery Corporation (CMEC) is providing support towards the development of the Gwagwalada Independent Power Plant (GIPP).
The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL ) for the co-funding of the GIPP Phase-1 Project in Beijing, China.
NNPC executive vice president, Gas Power & New Energy, Olalekan Ogunleye and chairman of CMEC Nigeria, Zhang Daguang, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective companies.
Also known as the Abuja IPP, the 350MW GIPP Phase 1 Project is one of the key anchor projects of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline Project which is in line with Nigeria’s Gas Master Plan infrastructure blueprint.
Upon completion, the GIPP Phase 1 Project is expected to improve power generation, create job opportunities, reduce gas flaring, and engender industrial development.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd has signed a deal with the China Engineering & Machinery Corporation (CMEC). The project which was flagged-off in August last year by President Bola Tinubu has been described as a game-changer in Nigeria’s power sector.
It is a 1,350MW Combined Cycle Power Plant with auxiliaries and Balance of Plant to be situated on 547 hectares of land already acquired at Gwagwalada, in Abuja
