The Edo State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Federal Government to facilitate the launch of the National Obstetrics Fistula Centre in Benin City.
Leading a delegation to the Edo State Government House, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Ishaq Salako, emphasised the centreโs role in treating Vesico Vaginal Fistula, a condition affecting thousands of women across Nigeria.
Dr Salako revealed that the centre was originally established in May 2023, just before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office, but lacked the necessary cooperation from the then Edo State Government, led by Godwin Obaseki.
โWe struggled from May 2023 until November 2024 before you became the Governor of Edo State, but in about three months, we have achieved what we could not in nearly 24 months,โ he stated, commending Governor Monday Okpebholo for his swift intervention.
โAll thanks to your administration. We appreciate your support, as we have secured a temporary facility to begin operations in Benin City. His Excellency has also provided 24 hectares of land for the permanent centre. You have demonstrated your commitment to healthcare at both the federal and state levels,โ Salako said.
Highlighting the urgency of addressing fistula cases in Nigeria, Salako stated: โFistula is a major challenge in Nigeria, with the country recording about 12,000 cases annuallyโthe highest burden in the world. Beyond being a medical issue, it is also a social and psychological problem, with some affected individuals even contemplating suicide.
โThe Federal Government has initiated a free fistula management programme, offering treatment, rehabilitation, and social support. So far, close to 1,700 cases have been treated at no cost, and we are committed to expanding this initiative.โ
Okpebholo expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for prioritising Edo State in development-oriented projects, emphasising the importance of the centre to the region.
โHealth is critical to the people of Edo, and this centre will not only serve the state but also the entire South-South and neighbouring states,โ the governor said.
Acknowledging the centreโs struggles over the past two years, Okpebholo pledged full support for its smooth take-off.
โThe hospital will commence operations soon, and the Edo State Government will provide all necessary support. We thank the Federal Government for choosing Edo State for this critical health intervention,โ the governor said.
