Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to fostering stronger international partnerships and deepening relations with member states of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, representing President Bola Tinubu, stated this at a high-level OACPS meeting on the sidelines of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, USA. Angola chaired the meeting.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Communication, Mr. Stanley Nkwocha, revealed this in a statement he signed Tuesday titled, โNigeria strengthens partnership with OACPS members at 79th UN General Assembly.โ
Shettima reiterated the importance of solidarity among member states facing numerous global challenges, emphasising Nigeriaโs commitment to the organisationโs goals while addressing pressing national concerns.
He said, โNigeria remains a principal partner of OACPS, championing our shared values of democracy, diaspora engagement, and development.
โOur presence here at the UN General Assembly allows us to amplify these priorities on the global stage and explore avenues for deeper collaboration.โ
The VP used the meeting to address Nigeriaโs recent inclusion on a high-risk jurisdiction list for anti-money laundering concerns, saying, โWeโre here to set the record straight and engage in constructive dialogue with our international partners.โ
He reaffirmed Nigeriaโs support for OACPS initiatives, including the organisationโs focus on Haitiโs ongoing crisis.
While acknowledging Kenyaโs contribution of 400 troops to Haiti, he highlighted Nigeriaโs historical role in South-South cooperation.
โOur technical aid corps programme, which has sent teachers and doctors to the Caribbean, exemplifies Nigeriaโs commitment to uplifting fellow OACPS nations,โ VP Shettima added.
The former Borno State Governor outlined Nigeriaโs strategy to leverage its position as Africaโs most populous nation to advocate OACPS interests, promote fair treatment in international financial systems, and strengthen ties with developing and developed nations.
He said, โWeโre representing Nigeriaโs interests while also championing the collective voice of the OACPS. President Tinubuโs vision for Nigeria aligns closely with the OACPS agenda. In todayโs interconnected world, our success is intertwined with that of our partner nations.โ
Earlier, the Secretary-General of OACPS, Georges Chikoti, lauded Nigeria as โa motor of the OACPS and an important member state.โ
Chikoti noted that the meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation with Nigeria and expressed gratitude for the countryโs significant contributions.
The Secretary-General expressed confidence in the UNโs involvement and commitment to supporting member states facing various challenges.
He also reiterated the importance of strengthening partnerships between OACPS member states and the European Union, focusing on crucial collaborations in environmental, infrastructure, education and business development.
