Two individuals from Briun community in Bou-Ko kingdom, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State, were fatally shot during a nighttime attack by gunmen on Tuesday.
The assault, occurring around 8 p.m., disrupted the peace of the community as many residents were indoors. Upon hearing the gunshots, some residents stayed inside while others fled the area upon learning of the deaths of two individuals, questioning the motives of the attackers.
Bright Nwiyorde, a community resident and Chairman of the Ken Saro-Wiwa Surveillance Group, emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice.
Advocating for enhanced security measures in the region to avoid a repeat of the heinous incident, Nwiyode urged the state government and relevant security forces to assist the community in apprehending the perpetrators.
According to him, “In Bou-ko kingdom, we heard that gunmen shot two people in Briun community at night.
“We don’t know the people and that is why we are calling on the government, the Commissioner of Police, the Khana Local Government Area chairman and the security at the local government level to come and investigate the matter and bring them to book.
“At the same time, as a security person, I’m also doing my investigation to help the government get to the root of the matter.”
Upon contact, the state police command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, mentioned not having received any report regarding the incident.
She assured that she would inquire with the Divisional Police Officer of the area and provide an update.
However, as of the time of compiling this report on Thursday evening, Superintendent of Police Iringe-Koko had not done so.
