The Kogi In Diaspora Association (KIDA), representing Kogi citizens worldwide, has appealed to the international community to intervene in what it calls the โbaseless harassmentโ of former Governor Yahaya Bello by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
In a letter addressed to various embassies and international bodies in Nigeria, KIDA Co-Convener, Seyi Olorunsola, expressed concern about the recent accusations leveled against Bello, alleging an N80 billion fraud committed before he assumed office in 2015.
The letter, dated 9 February 2024, emphasised the implausibility of such accusations, highlighting that Bello lacked authority to misappropriate such funds prior to his governorship. It further noted the dismissal of a previous case against Bello in 2021, where the EFCC accused him of laundering N20 billion, raising concerns about the agencyโs motives.
KIDA views these actions as โsensational media trialsโ that tarnish reputations and undermine the principles of justice and fair play. The letter urges the international community to intervene, emphasizing the โsignificant threatโ the EFCCโs alleged misuse of power poses to Nigerian citizensโ rights and freedoms.
โWe believe that your intervention can play a pivotal role in preventing further unjust harassment and ensuring due process for those targeted,โ the letter states.
KIDA concludes by requesting engagement with the Nigerian authorities, urging them to uphold the rule of law and protect fundamental citizen rights.
โWe implore your esteemed diplomatic offices, representing the international community and international institutions, to use your influential channels to address this matter urgently. The abuse of power by the EFCC poses a significant threat to the freedom and rights of Nigerian citizens. We believe that your intervention can play a pivotal role in preventing further unjust harassment and ensuring due process for those targeted,โ the letter states.
โAs advocates for justice and human rights, we kindly request that you engage with the Nigerian authorities, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and preventing any actions that violate the fundamental rights of citizens. Together, we can work towards fostering a fair and just society in Nigeria.โ
The associationโs appeal reflects growing anxieties within the Nigerian diaspora regarding potential abuses of power and the need for international scrutiny to ensure justice prevails.
