LAGOS – A controversy has arisen over the sugar content in a Chivita beverage after governance expert Joe Abah voiced worries about the quantity of sugar in a commonly served fruit drink in-flight.
Abah drew attention to the 125ml Chivita Happy Hour drink, claiming it contains almost five sugar cubes.
He urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to clarify whether such a level is within acceptable limits.
“Dear @DGatNAFDAC, this tiny 125ml Chivita Happy Hour drink they give on aircraft contains nearly five cubes of sugar. Is that okay?” he queried.
In its response, NAFDAC stated that the product, produced by Chi Limited under the Chivita brand, is officially registered and meets the Nigerian Industrial Standards for flavoured beverages.
At the same time, the agency acknowledged rising health concerns tied to high sugar intake and disclosed that the manufacturer is in the process of adjusting the product’s formulation to lower its sugar content.
NAFDAC further explained that it is implementing wider regulatory measures to tackle dietary risks, including proposed rules to limit the promotion of foods and drinks high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats, especially those marketed to children.
Reaffirming its commitment to public health, the agency said it remains focused on promoting safer consumption habits and supporting efforts to cut down excessive sugar intake nationwide.
The debate over Chivita’s sugar levels reflects growing scrutiny of processed drinks in Nigeria, as health advocates continue to call for tighter regulations and clearer food labeling.
