The apex body of students in Nigeria and in Diaspora, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced that its 84th Senate sitting is scheduled to take place at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Oyo State.
A statement signed by Dist. Sen. Akinteye Babatunde, President of Senate, NANS Headquarters, stated that the event, themed: โThe Role of Students in Maintaining National Peace,โ will convene from July 26th to July 28th, 2024 while the sitting will commence at 10:00 a.m..
The statement reads in parts,โThe arrival of delegates is slated for July 26th, 2024 with the formal sitting scheduled for July 27th, 2024. Departure will follow on July 28th, 2024.
โThis gathering represents a crucial moment for Nigerian students to deliberate on their vital role in fostering and maintaining peace within the nation.
โStudents are pivotal in the quest for national peace. As future leaders, we possess the energy, creativity, and passion needed to drive positive change. Our active involvement in promoting dialogue, understanding, and tolerance is essential in bridging divides within communities. Through educational initiatives, community service, and advocacy, we can champion the values of peace and unity.
โEducation remains a powerful tool in combating ignorance and prejudice, which are often at the root of conflict. By engaging in academic pursuits and extracurricular activities that promote peace, we can influence our peers and communities positively.
โParticipation in peace-building activities not only enriches our educational experience but also prepares each other for responsible citizenship,โ he stated.
Emphasising the roles of students, the NANS Senate President stated that students are important in holding authorities accountable and ensuring that governance structures are transparent and just.
NANS added, โBy advocating for policies that promote social justice, equity, and inclusivity, we contribute to creating an environment where peace can thrive. Our voices, when united, can drive national conversations towards solutions that address the root causes of unrest.โ
Comrade Akinteye explained that the upcoming Senate sitting will provide a platform for robust discussions and strategic planning on how students will further contribute to national peace.
