Nigeria has lost one of its most respected military figures and statesmen, Major General Abdullahi “Adangba” Mohammed (rtd), a former Chief of Staff to ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo and erstwhile Director-General of the defunct National Security Organization (NSO), precursor to the Department of State Services (DSS). He passed away at the age of 86.
Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq described his death as “a profound loss not just to the Ilorin Emirate but to the entire nation,” noting that General Mohammed was “a fine soldier, administrator, and community leader whose service to Nigeria spanned critical moments in the nation’s political and military history.”
Born in Ilorin, the late General served with distinction in various national roles — as Military Governor of Benue-Plateau State, Director-General of the NSO, National Security Adviser to former Head of State General Abdulsalami Abubakar, and later as Chief of Staff to Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umar Musa Yar’Adua.
Governor AbdulRazaq extended condolences to the Emir of Ilorin, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, the Ilorin Emirate, the Nigerian military, and the family of the deceased.
He prayed Allah to grant the departed statesman eternal rest in Al-Jannah Firdaus and give his family fortitude to bear the loss.
In a separate condolence message, the Emir of Ilorin and Chairman of the Kwara State Traditional Rulers Council, Mai-Martaba Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari CFR, expressed deep sadness over the passing of the elder statesman.
According to his Press Secretary, Dr. Abdulazeez Arowona, the Emir described the late Gen. Abdullahi Adangba Mohammed, fondly known as “Atoto,” as “a proud indigene of Ilorin Emirate and a distinguished Nigerian who used his positions, strength, and wealth to protect and promote the heritage of Ilorin Emirate and humanity at large.”
“He was indeed a patriotic and detribalised Nigerian whose contributions to national unity and development know no bounds,” the Emir said, adding that the late General also extended opportunities to the less privileged in society.
The Emir extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, the governments of Kwara and Plateau States, and the Federal Government of Nigeria.
He prayed Almighty Allah to grant him forgiveness, accept his good deeds, and admit him into Al-Jannah Firdaus.
