As part of efforts to clean up oil spill and stop environmental degradation occuring in the Nigeria’s oil-producing states and the Niger Delta Region, Anthonymaria Odukaesieme, an environmental rights advocate and foremost researcher in marine plants, has scientifically invented Spillguard Oil-Absorbent, crude oil-absorbent for oil spill clean-up and bioremediation.
Speaking with Independent during the presentation of the product in Lagos at the weekend, Odukaesieme said that his great scientific invention for environmental safety in oil exploration is an indigenous biodegradable oil absorbent polymer, which is 100 percent natural, human and environmental friendly, and capable of cleaning up all levels of oil spillage on water and land.
He said that “Spillguard Oil-Absorbent is a natural absorbent capable of cleaning up crude and processed oil spill of any magnitude in any terrain and climate conditions anywhere -owing to its quickness to absorb, grab and guard the oil on water and land for easy removal.
“It is capable of removing oil spill in the farmlands, swamps, creeks, water ways and deep seas for increase in aquatic and green life and other teaming lives in their natural breeding social conditions and habitats.”
Odukaesieme, who is also a scientist, author, and medical practitioner, affirmed that the invention, which is registered in 2002 in Part “A” of the Register with trademark number, TP/68471/02 of the Federal Ministry of Commerce and Industry in Nigeria, is also used for the polluted soil remediation for the environment to strive vegetatively, and the farm lands to yield good harvest.
According to him, “Spillguard Oil-Absorbent is an aerated sorbent extracted from the lixiviation and percolation of carbonated biodegradable materials. It is highly effective and efficient, and has the ability to contain all levels of oil spillage within few minutes of application by its high performance and concentration to hold the oil for a long time in a marine and non- marine environments.”
On what the Federal Governmnent and oil-producing states stand to gain from the product, which was registered in Class 5 in respect of Pharmaceutical, Veterinary and Sanitary by Spillguard Nigeria Limited, a Subsidiary of Wisdom Health Produce Limited, Odukaesieme said: “Spillguard Oil-Absorbent is a natural sorbent used for both crude and processed oil spill clean-up. It is a soft and fuzzy gray active sorbent capable of arresting oil on water. When applied on oil on water, it marks out the oil and engulfs it; thereby taking full charge of the spill by smartly nesting on it and clotting it, and reducing it to wax for easy removal with net or netted materials.”
Confirming that Spillguard Oil-Absorbent is readily available in large quantities, Odukaesieme, who is a complimentary technologist in phyto-medicine, said: “All the raw materials used to manufacture Spillguard Oil-Absorbent is 100% locally sourced. “The oil cleared from the spill can be recycled in any oil mill refinery using pressers, and the oil is extracted and put into use while the remains of the Spillguard Oil-Absorbent is used as Bitumen, Fossil fuel or incinerated to be used as organic fertilizer, solid energy or coal.”
