ABUJA – For seven hours daily, various parts of the nation’s capital, Abuja, will experience an 11-day power outage as a precautionary measure during ongoing road construction, as stated by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
Although an exact calculation of the loss in productivity has not been determined yet, experts anticipate that numerous sectors will be impacted by the power interruption. Among those affected will be hoteliers, hospitality services, artisans, and other service-based industries.
TCN attributed the need for the power shedding to the relocation of eight 132kV and 33kV towers along the Kukwaba/Apo 132kV line due to the Federal Capital Development Agency’s road dualisation project along the Apo axis.
This relocation work will necessitate a scheduled power outage from Monday, 6 January to Monday, 20 January, between 9am and 4pm daily, in order to dismantle and construct the towers and restring the power cables to restore bulk power supply to the Apo Transmission Substation from the Gwagwalada Substation.
There are eleven days remaining in the scheduled power outage period.
Consequently, there will be an electricity supply rationing for AEDC’s customers in Kubwa, Karu, Maraba, Nyanya, Masaka, Keffi, Kukwaba, and Apo Mechanic. This will also impact parts of Lugbe, Trademore Estate, Pyakasa, Sabon Lugbe, Chika, and Alaita areas, according to TCN.
While the tower relocation is essential for the road project’s completion, TCN expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the planned power outage and assured customers that power supply would be restored promptly upon completion of the tower relocation and cable restringing.
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) confirmed that several parts of the Nigerian capital will experience a 16-day power outage. AEDC provided a more detailed list of the areas, businesses, and institutions that will undergo load shedding in the coming weeks.
These include Lugbe, Airport Road, Kapwa, NNPC, Games Village, National Stadium, Eye Clinic, Indoor Complex, Christ Embassy Church, American International School, Spring Court, American Embassy Quarters, EFCC HQ, Coca Cola, Railway, FMC, parts of Apo, Gudu, Kubwa, Jahi, Jabi, Karu, Nyanya, Mararaba, Keffi, Gbazango, and other areas of Abuja.
“We are working diligently to minimize downtime and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused,”stated AEDC.
