LAGOS – Professor Olufemi Idowu has emerged the 10th Provost of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM).
According to a release issued by the LASU Centre for Information and Public Relations (CIPR), Idowu floored his contender, Prof Mobolaji Oludara, a former Acting Provost in what is generally agreed to be a cleanly contested election for the hallowed position.
This development underscores the vibrant democratic ethos of the College and the power of its Academic Staff Assembly.
The election, which was held today, Tuesday, 17th December 2024 in the Medical Sciences Auditorium, witnessed an impressive voter turnout comprised members of the college’s Academic Staff Assembly.
The process, overseen by the Chief Electoral Officer and Registrar of the University, Mr Emmanuel F’anu who was represented by the College Secretary – Mr O.A. Oyebanjo, was lauded by observers of the poll for its transparency and adherence to electoral standards.
As the newly elected Provost, Prof Olufemi Idowu, who had also occupied the seat in an acting capacity, is set to assume office in January, 2025.
His administration will inherit ongoing projects, most notably the transmutation plans of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), into the University of Medical and Health Sciences by the Lagos State Government.
Speaking to the Information Unit immediately after the announcement of his victory, Prof Olufemi Idowu expressed gratitude to the college community and reaffirmed his commitment to fostering a culture of academic excellence and inclusive leadership.
“This victory is a collective one. Together, we will chart a bold and progressive course for our college and its transmutation, ensuring its continued prominence on the global stage,” he remarked
The college community anticipates a seamless transition as the newly elected provost prepares to build on the legacy of outgoing Provost, Professor Abiodun Adewuya.
The College Community has expressed optimism that the new leadership will further elevate the institution’s reputation as a leading medical education and research hub.
This humble reporter, an uncommon survivor, can testify without any fear that Prof Olufemi Idowu is a consummate consultant (Brain and Spine Neurosurgeon and Anatomist who has produced a host of other medical experts across public and private medical institutions in Nigeria and beyond.
Idowu is a unique species of medic with uncommon humane disposition whom God has used leading teams of young surgeons to save lives.
