A conflict between an army officer and a policeman has resulted in the death of two people in Obi Local Government Area of Taraba State.
An army officer and a police special constabulary from Jenkwe Division, Obi Local Government region, clashed at Agyaragu Market on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of two people in the Obi local government region.
The incident occurred on Sunday at approximately 12:30 PM following an inquiry into a suspected motorbike theft case, according to a statement issued by DSP Ramhan Nansel, the state’s Police Relations Officer.
The statement claims that a police officer working with a Police Special Constabulary attached to Jenkwe Division, Obi Local Government Area, at Agyaragu Market, arrested a suspect following the reporting of the theft case.
However, a soldier (name withheld) who was allegedly deployed in Borno State but returned home on leave attacked the police officers as they were transporting the suspect to the police station in an attempt to stop them from making the arrest.
Consequently, the statement alleged that the soldier brought out a knife and stabbed the Police Special Constabulary.
“In self-defence, the soldier was overpowered, and his knife was used against him. They both sustained varying degrees of injuries, and the wounded soldier was subsequently confirmed dead,” the statement said in part.
According to reports, several young people organized and stormed the police station, lighting it on fire in the process.

Three of the attackers were reportedly killed when police arrived at the scene of the incident, and one of them was later pronounced dead.
“Upon receipt of the information, the Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Nadada immediately visited the scene alongside Military personnel from Operation Whirl Stroke, 177 Guards Battalion and 22 Quick Response Unit where he swiftly ordered the deployment of a unit of Police Mobile Force, a cell of Counter Terrorist Unit and Tactical units to restore peace in the area,” the statement added.
The statement went on to say that everything are back to normal and that the commissioner has ordered a manhunt for the offenders while an inquiry is still underway.
