The Chief Medical Director of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Prof. Idia Ize-Iyamu, has cautioned candidates seeking internship placements at the hospital against paying anyone for assistance, stressing that the process is completely free and merit-based.
Prof. Ize-Iyamu gave the warning while addressing over 1,500 candidates participating in the internship interview exercise at the University of Benin CBT centres. She assured the applicants of transparency and fairness in the selection process, urging them to rely on their performance rather than influence or connections.
“This interview is to ensure that only the best are shortlisted. Connections will not be used. Do not give anyone money to help you secure placement,” she said.
The CMD emphasized that the hospital does not operate any “special list” or backdoor arrangement for applicants, noting that the exercise is being monitored by observers from the Federal Ministry of Health, the Federal Character Commission (FCC), and the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation.
She encouraged the candidates to remain focused and perform well, adding, “Do your best, and I wish you good luck.”
Representative of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mr. Kayode Oke, commended UBTH for conducting a hitch-free and credible selection process.
Also speaking, the Edo State Director of the FCC, Barr. Simon Ehigie, said the exercise was in line with approved guidelines and adhered strictly to the Federal Character principle.
He noted that candidates were drawn from all 36 states of the federation, adding that while equitable representation was ensured, “the FCC will not sacrifice merit on the altar of balancing.”
