About 15 persons including children were reportedly dead at Ugwu Onyeama, along Enugu -Onitsha expressway on Saturday.
An eye witness account said that the accident occurred as a result of reckless overtaking by the tanker driver
The blast was described as devastating as it destroyed nearby vehicles and causing widespread panic.
It was learnt that rescue efforts were hindered by the intensity of the fire, making it difficult for bystanders to access the scene.
Victims who were reportedly burnt beyond recognition are believed to be occupants of the vehicles caught in the inferno.
When contacted, the sector commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Franklin Agbakoba Onyekwere, said that he was at the crime scene and could not disclose the casualty figures as at the time of this report.
