_Nigerian Clubs Off to a Strong Start in CAF Champions League_
Enugu Rangers and Remo Stars, two Nigerian football clubs, have made a winning start in the CAF Champions League qualifying rounds. This marks a promising beginning in their bid to become the first Nigerian title-holders since 2004.
Enugu Rangers secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Zilimadjou of the Comoros, with Frank Uwumiro scoring the winning goal in the first half. Due to the Comoros’ lack of an international-standard stadium, both legs of the match will be held in Uyo, Nigeria.
Remo Stars, on the other hand, overcame an early second-half concession to edge out former African champions FAR Rabat of Morocco 2-1. Ismaila Sodiq scored the winning goal for Remo Stars in the 66th minute, setting up an exciting return match on August 25 in Morocco.
Other notable results include Pyramids’ impressive 6-0 win over JKU of Zanzibar, with Mohanad Lasheen scoring twice. Al Ahly, 12-time champions, received a bye into the second round, where they will face either Merreikh Bentiu of South Sudan or Gor Mahia of Kenya.
In other matches, Orlando Pirates drew 0-0 with Disciples of Madagascar, while Samartex of Ghana secured a 1-0 win over Victoria United of Cameroon, thanks to Emmanuel Mamah’s goal just after half-time.
