The Abia State Government has announced plans for the massive recruitment of teachers for primary and secondary schools across the state, as part of efforts to strengthen the education sector.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this in Umuahia on Tuesday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti on Monday.
Kanu revealed that the state Ministry of Education has commenced the enforcement of its Out-of-School Children Policy initiative.
He noted that education marshals have been appointed to implement the policy, working alongside the Harmonized Taskforce and other stakeholders, including community leaders and security agencies.
Kanu said, “Abia State Government has concluded plans to embark on a massive employment of teachers in the state for both primary and secondary schools.
“The Ministry of Education has also fully commenced the enforcement of the Out-of-School Children Policy initiative with the appointment of education marshals. These marshals, assisted by the Harmonized Taskforce, will ensure compliance, with the involvement of community stakeholders and security agencies.”
In a bid to enhance learning, particularly in science-related disciplines, the state government has introduced a Mathematics Clinic aimed at strengthening foundational knowledge in the subject.
“To improve teaching programs in schools, the state government has introduced a Mathematics Clinic to enhance the teaching and understanding of basic courses central to science disciplines,” Kanu added.
On health, the state government announced plans to flag off the Abia Medical City, a landmark project aimed at reversing medical tourism and attracting patients from across the country.
“With the massive investment of the state government in the health sector, the Abia Medical City will soon be flagged off. This signature project is designed to reverse medical tourism and direct traffic to the state for quality medical services,” the Health Commissioner stated.
Kanu also highlighted the state’s push to enhance its oil production capacity. According to him, the government has established a Special Purpose Vehicle with a 40% equity stake to drive this initiative.
“The modular refinery project is on course and will be realized before the end of 2025,” Kanu assured, adding that the project would significantly boost the state’s economic prospects.
