Prince Dapo Abiodun, the Ogun state governor has ordered with immediate effect the clampdown of all illegal garages in the state
He said their operations are not only illegal, but are used to exploit commuters, drivers and other good people of the state through their exorbitant charges and unexplained levies at this period when the state government is doing everything possible to bring down transportation fares in the state.
The Governor gave the order in the aftermath of shutting down of two illegal garages at the NNPC Junction and opposite June 12 Cultural Center in Abeokuta by the State Taskforce Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Exercise led by Chairman, Alhaji Farook Akintunde for constituting environmental nuisances and operating illegally on roadsides.
Abiodun while commending the Taskforce ordered the extension of the exercise statewide and total clampdown on illegal garages especially in the Mowe-Ibafo axis and Sango-Ota, said aside from these garages exploiting commuters, they constitutes security risks to residents of the state as they serve as criminals hideouts through the shanties and makeshift structures associated with them.
“As a responsible government we will not fold our hands and watch operators of these garages expose our people to unnecessary danger. In addition, this is a crucial period when our people deserve all palliatives that will relieve them of the current economic reality in the country,”
He also used the opportunity to call on residents of the state to stop patronizing all illegal garages for their safety and commute through government recognized garages as well as board government CNG buses for their low fare and comfortability.
