LAGOS-Nigerian music superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has confidently declared that Afrobeat artists have finally bridged the gap and are now on an equal footing with global music icons like Drake.
During a panel discussion with the United States Advisory Council on Africa Diaspora Engagement and leaders in Nigeria’s creative industries, Davido pointed out the remarkable expansion of Afrobeats. He stressed that Afrobeat musicians are now packing venues and earning substantial income, competing with pop and hip-hop artists.
“Afrobeats artists are now selling the same tickets as Drake. One song as an Afrobeats artiste can change your generation,” Davido stated.
He highlighted that the income from a single Afrobeats track could lead to lasting wealth, showcasing the genre’s significant surge in worldwide appeal.
He advised up-and-coming artists to focus on teaming up with fellow artists rather than chasing after international collaborations. “When you collaborate with your friends, they put their all”, he remarked.
Afrobeats has experienced a significant rise in worldwide acclaim in recent times, with Davido, Wizkid, and Tiwa Savage leading the way. Their achievements have elevated Afrobeats to a prominent position on the global music scene.
