LAGOS – A new initiative, Agtrade.ng under the Supply Chain Research and Innovation Hub, has been unveiled to assist agricultural stakeholders address the pressing issue of food insecurity and fortify the national security framework by providing daily price data of agricultural commodities.
Adebayo Adeleke, a food chain security expert, who is the leader driving the Agtrade.ng platform project while speaking on the unveiling in Lagos explained that the informal agricultural sector in many countries operates outside the purview of formal economic reports, leaving a significant gap in the understanding of market dynamics.
According to him, Agtrade.ng would fill the gap by collecting real-time data from various locations, offering a granular view that is often missing in traditional analyses.
While breaking it down, the food chain security expert said that the data collection is not a mere academic exercise; that it has profound implications for stakeholders across the agricultural value chain, stressing that farmers, traders, and policymakers can leverage this data to make more informed decisions.
“By understanding regional price disparities, farmers can identify more lucrative markets for their produce. Traders can optimize their supply chains, reducing costs and increasing efficiency.
“Policymakers, on the other hand, can gain insights into the factors driving market fluctuations, enabling them to craft more effective agricultural policies,” he said.
On mitigating food insecurity via data, he pointed out that food insecurity is a pressing issue that affects millions of people worldwide and that Agtrade.ng’s daily tracking of price fluctuations provides a vital tool in addressing this challenge.
By identifying periods of volatility, he stressed that the platform can signal impending food shortages or surpluses, saying that this foresight is invaluable for governments and organizations looking to take preemptive actions.

“For instance, during times of anticipated food shortages, governments can release strategic food reserves to stabilize the market. Conversely, in times of surplus, they can implement measures to prevent waste, such as providing subsidies to encourage consumption. “Moreover, Agtrade.ng’s data can identify vulnerable regions, enabling targeted interventions to ensure that all areas have access to affordable and nutritious food,” Adeleke said.
Speaking further he said the platform under his visionary leadership is making significant strides in this direction by providing daily agricultural commodity price data.
He said that the platform is not only addressing immediate food security challenges but also contributing to the long-term stability and prosperity of the nation.
“Agtrade.ng is a critical tool in the fight against food insecurity. Its daily collection of agricultural commodity price data serves as a vital resource for stakeholders across the agricultural value chain.
“By providing real-time insights into market dynamics, the platform enables more informed decision-making, fostering a more resilient and adaptive agricultural ecosystem. This in turn, enhances national security, promotes social stability, and contributes to global food security.
“As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, initiatives like Agtrade.ng will be indispensable in ensuring a stable and prosperous future for all.
While emphasising the role of data in informing agricultural practices and policies which according to him cannot be overemphasized noted that in an era where food security is becoming increasingly intertwined with national security, the platform is set to play a significant role.
