Journalists in Akwa Ibom State have finalised arrangements to organise the first-ever media stakeholders summit in the state.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the summitโs secretary, Mr Kufre Etuk, Editor of The Crest newspaper, it was announced that the one-day summit, themed โThe State of the Media in Akwa Ibom State: The Way Forwardโ, will take place at 10 am on Friday, 20th September 2024, at the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat, Information Drive, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
The statement partly reads: โThe summit, which will bring together reporters, editors, and publishers in the state for a โmuch-needed stocktakingโ, will be co-chaired by Mr Israel Umoh, former NUJ Chairman and Publisher of Straightnews newspaper, and Mr Cletus Ukpong, the Regional Editor for South-South/South-East at Premium Times.โ
The NUJ Akwa Ibom State Council Chairman, Mr Amos Etuk, and the Chancellor of the Conference of Online Publishers, Akwa Ibom State, Mr Utitofon Morgan Ukpong, are expected to deliver goodwill messages at the summit.
Additionally, Dr Idongesit Ashameri, a former NUJ Correspondentsโ Chapel Chairman, will deliver a keynote address titled โMedia Practice in Akwa Ibom: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrowโ.
Other speakers include Mr Idorenyin Aquaisua, Publisher of MediaPost International, who will discuss โThe Challenges of the Media Industry in Akwa Ibom Stateโ, and Mr Ekemini Simon, an award-winning journalist with The Mail newspaper, Uyo, who will address โOpportunities for Media Sustainability in Akwa Ibom Stateโ.
Otuekong Franklyn Isong, Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Accountability Network, an internationally recognised human rights and pro-democracy organisation, will examine โPress Freedom in Akwa Ibomโ, while Mr Ukpong will speak on โEthical and Responsible Journalism in the Stateโ.
The statement further notes that the summit, which is by invitation only, will feature two sessions: a pre-summit session with media relations managers and a stakeholdersโ
business session.
