Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi achieved two significant milestones during Fulham’s narrow 3-2 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium on Friday night. Despite Fulham’s defensive struggles, Iwobi delivered an outstanding performance, scoring both goals for his team.
Fulham’s night was marred by defensive mistakes, with costly errors from Andreas Pereira and Bernd Leno gifting goals to Carlos Soler and Lucas Paquetá. Tomáš Souček also found the net, helping West Ham secure a win in Graham Potter’s debut as the Hammers’ manager.
West Ham took control of the match with two quick goals in just over two minutes during the first half. Soler and Souček capitalized on lapses in Fulham’s defense to put the home side in a commanding position.
Iwobi’s individual brilliance offered hope for Fulham. Early in the second half, his curling cross bypassed everyone, including West Ham goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański, and found the back of the net in the 51st minute.
However, West Ham restored their two-goal lead in the 67th minute when another defensive error allowed Paquetá to score. Iwobi responded in the 78th minute with a second goal, replicating his earlier effort as another cross slipped past Fabiański. Harry Wilson came close to connecting but narrowly missed a touch.
Iwobi’s double marked a career milestone. His Premier League tally for Fulham now stands at 12 goals in 51 appearances, surpassing the 11 goals he scored during 100 games for Arsenal and the six he managed across 123 matches for Everton.
This season, Iwobi has already scored seven league goals, setting a personal best and surpassing the five goals he recorded in 30 games last season.
Additionally, he climbed to seventh place on the all-time list of Nigerian goal-scorers in Premier League history, with 29 goals. He overtook Victor Anichebe (27 goals) and Obafemi Martins (28 goals) but remains behind legends like Peter Odemwingie (37 goals), Nwankwo Kanu (54 goals), and Yakubu Aiyegbeni (95 goals).
Fulham manager Marco Silva expressed frustration with his team’s errors after the match.
“We were punished by our own mistakes,” Silva told Sky Sports. “We created enough chances to be in front, but our defensive lapses cost us. We lost focus during their second goal, and while we had chances to equalize, we made it too easy for them to score.”
Silva highlighted opportunities missed by Raul Jiménez and Adama Traoré, insisting the result did not reflect Fulham’s overall performance.
Fulham will aim to recover from the loss when they face Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday. The team will hope to iron out defensive weaknesses and build on Iwobi’s inspiring form to secure crucial points in the Premier League.
