The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has officially approved the renaming of the Honey Badgers of Makurdi to Benue Queens following the Benue State Government’s successful acquisition of the club.
This was confirmed in a statement by NWFL Media Director, Samuel Ahmadu, who revealed that the approval came after a rigorous verification process.
The process ensured that the Benue State Government met all requirements for the takeover and the subsequent name change.
A letter signed by NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, conveyed the approval and stated that Benue Queens would immediately assume all fixtures, points, and standings previously held by Honey Badgers in the NWFL Premiership.
Shabi commended the Benue State Government for its commitment to the league’s standards.
“After undergoing the rigorous processes designed to admit only serious, business-minded entities into club ownership, the NWFL is satisfied that the Benue State Government has met all criteria and is granted full approval to take over Honey Badgers,” she stated.
She further expressed optimism about the positive impact of the transition, emphasizing that the government’s commitment to running the club in line with NWFL regulations would uphold the league’s integrity and protect the interests of players and other stakeholders.
The acquisition comes on the heels of Honey Badgers’ historic promotion to the NWFL Premiership, a remarkable achievement as they climbed from the lower divisions to the top tier of Nigerian women’s football.
Benue Queens, based in Makurdi, are set to compete in Group B of the NWFL Premiership against seasoned teams such as Naija Ratels, Ibom Angels, Adamawa Queens, Delta Queens, Bayelsa Queens, and Rivers Angels.
Their debut in Nigeria’s top-flight women’s league will take place on January 15, 2025, in Lafia, Nasarawa State, with a much-anticipated clash against the formidable Robo Queens.
