ABUJA. – The Chartered Institute of Project Managers of Nigeria(CIPMN), has inducted over 200 members to boost the professionalism and accountability of project management in the country.
Addressing newsmen shortly after the induction ceremony on Thursday in Abuja,
Mr. Henry Mbadiwe, Registrar of CIPMN, described the exercise as a new dawn in project management in Nigeria.
He noted with joy that with over 200 professional project managers inducted as well as licensed, that they would contribute immensely to national development.
He revealed that the new inductees drawn from wide spectrum of society, include the civil servants, private sector operators, chief executive officers of government agencies, directors of companies, Vice Chancellors of Universities, as well as the Special Adviser to the President on Project Monitoring and Coordination, adding that human capital development remains the only way to scale up the nation’s Gross Domestic Product(GDP).
He added that these inductees would work assiduously to reduce waste in project management as well as ensure increased productivity in the country.
It would be recalled that the Chartered Institute of Project Managers of Nigeria(CIPMN) recently revealed that the cost of abandoned projects in Nigeria stands at over N17 trillion.
Mbadiwe explained that the research conducted by the Institute revealed that the main causes of abandoned projects in Nigeria included, “Lack of articulated vision and objects; lack of proper project planning from the onset; lack of proper budgetary allocation for the project; inefficient legal system; corruption and compromises as well as weak institutions in Nigeria that lead to a lack of continuity with changes in the political administration.”
He affirmed that CIPMN would move past administration changes and their limitations and begin to enforce the law establishing the Institute.
He also warned unlicensed project managers overseeing projects in Nigeria, to desist from such act forthwith or face the consequences of their actions.
Mbadiwe stated that CIPMN is the only statutory body empowered to regulate the practice of project managers in Nigeria.
It would be recalled that as part of the mandate of CIPMN, the Institute trains, educates and examines persons desiring to become professional Project Managers or consultants whether in Nigeria or abroad; regulates the discipline and professional conduct of its members as well as promotes and projects the welfare of its members both in Nigeria and abroad.
The CIPMN is under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment.
