A viral video of a Traditional Ruler, Ogunjobi aggressively and physically abusing one of his chiefs, Arinola Abraham gas surfaced and caused an uproar.
The Ifo Magistrate Court has arraigned Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, the suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo. Adewale faces three charges: conspiracy, assault, and behavior likely to cause a breach of public peace.
He was arraigned by the Nigeria Police Force on Tuesday. This comes after the Ogun State Government suspended him for allegedly acting in an impolite manner.
Following a widely shared video showing the monarch reportedly attacking, verbally harassing, and even threatening to kill an elderly man named Mr. Areola Abraham, the arraignment took place.
However, he has been granted bail while the matter is postponed until March 6 for more hearings.
A widely shared video of Ogunjobi aggressively and physically abusing one of his chiefs, Arinola Abraham, caused indignation. The two-minute video showed Arinola kneeling on the road as a man who was allegedly Ogunjobi lambasted him and his family and accused him of plotting.
Threatening to imprison the chief, the monarch, who was allegedly a retired police officer, also boasted of his power over law enforcement.
Earlier, the Ogun State said it has suspended Ogunjobi for six months over what it called an “uncivil conduct”.
Ogunjobi’s actions were inappropriate for a traditional ruler, according to Ganiu Hazmat, the state’s Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
According to the commissioner, the government made the decision in an effort to preserve the sanctity of the esteemed traditional institution and to uphold the dignity of all people. After inviting the traditional ruler and his victim to the ministry for questioning, he said, the decision was made.
“After the investigation conducted on the matter, Oba Ogunjobi has been suspended. He has been stripped of the paraphernalia of the stool of Olorile of Orile-Ifo pending the determination of his culpability or otherwise in the matter,” Hamzat said.
The Commissioner said the decision was reached by the Ministry in conjunction with the Egba Traditional Council.
“This was in accordance with Section 52(1) of the Obas and Chiefs’ Law of Ogun State 2021,” he said.
