A Nigerian lawyer, Waliu Taofik, has weighed in on the legal implications of the recent court wedding between popular content creator, Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as Peller, and his partner, Amadou Elizabeth Aminata, also known as Jarvis, amid online debates about divorce, property sharing and polygamy.
The lawyer’s comments came after videos of the couple’s civil wedding surfaced online on Wednesday, sparking conversations about whether Peller, a Muslim, could legally marry another woman despite contracting a statutory marriage.
In a post on his X handle on Thursday, Taofik argued that under Nigerian law, a Muslim man who contracted a marriage under the Marriage Act could still marry another Muslim woman under Islamic law.
“Peller, I am pleased to inform you that as a Muslim man that married under the Act, you’re allowed under the law to get married to another woman (a Muslim woman) under Islamic law (Nikkah). So, the so-called ‘registry’ or ‘court’ marriage does not affect Muslim men,” he wrote.
The legal opinion followed widespread speculation on social media after the couple’s court wedding, with some users claiming Jarvis would automatically be entitled to half of Peller’s wealth if the marriage ended in divorce.
Others questioned whether the marriage would legally prevent the content creator from taking another wife in future because of his religion.
Peller and Jarvis officially exchanged vows at a civil ceremony attended by family members and close friends before signing the marriage register.
The ceremony comes ahead of their white wedding, scheduled for August 1, 2026.
Earlier this month, the couple announced the wedding date through a cinematic video shared across their social media platforms, before releasing their official pre-wedding photographs.
“Our hearts are full, our smiles are real, and we’re counting down to forever. See you at the wedding,” they wrote in a joint Instagram post.
Before formalising their union, Peller had also completed the traditional marriage rites in Benin City, Edo State, where he met Jarvis’ family and paid her bride price.
The couple have become one of Nigeria’s most popular influencer pairs, building a massive online following through comedy skits, TikTok livestreams and relationship-focused content.
