The Nigeria First Project (NF-PRO), a northern based Civil Society Organizations on Tuesday thrown its weight behind the Cybersecurity Levy.
Hamza Umar Saulawa, the group’s Coordinator who spoke at a press conference in Kano, urged Nigerians to support the levy to assist government combat cybercrimes and terrorism in Nigeria.
Consequently, President Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration has rolled up the policy for review following outcry in Nigeria.
Umar Saulawa who was flanked by other members of the group that includes Bishir Dauda Sabuwar Unguwa, the Director of Research and Documentation, cited its potential to restore the country’s image, tackle cybercrimes, and fund counterterrorism efforts.
The CSO emphasized that cybercrime is not only damaging Nigeria’s economy but also tarnishing its global image, leading to unfair treatment of innocent Nigerians worldwide.
They highlighted the alarming rate of cybercrime, with Nigeria losing $500 million annually, and the need for decisive action.
NF-PRO dismissed criticisms of the levy, citing the benefits of improved funding for counterterrorism and violent extremism, as well as the transparent management of the fund under the office of the National Security Adviser.
They expressed confidence in the sincerity of the Bola Tinubu-led administration and the National Security Adviser’s track record.
The group called on all patriotic Nigerians to rally behind the federal government in its efforts to combat cybercrimes, terrorism, and criminality, and to trust the country’s institutions and leaders.
With the Cybersecurity Levy, Nigeria can take a significant step towards a safer, more secure future.
