Former Chairman of Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers and the Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Adebanji Alabi, has cautioned telecommunications service providers against ripping off Nigerians with tariff increases without commensurate good services.
Alabi, who bemoaned the poor services of a mobile telecom services provider, MTN, in his community for upward of about two months, said that โmany communities in Nigeria, no doubt, would be agonising under similar poor servicesโ.
The monarch, in a statement by his media adviser, Ajibade Olubunmi, titled, โTariff increase can only be justified by improved servicesโ made available at Ilawe Ekiti on Friday, queried, โWhat is the justification for tariff increase for poor services?โ
Recall that Alabi had on December 29, 2024, wrote a complaint letter to the MTN for intervention to restore good services to his community, saying, โMy people are agitated and I have to bring the matter to your notice for your proper intervention and repairs before the agitation gets out of controlโ.
The monarchย frowned at the poor services being rendered to his community by the telecommunication company, which he said prompted him to personally sign two letters on behalf of his community to MTN to rectify the horrible situation.
He stated, โIt is quite surprising and most disappointing that the problem still persists up to dateโ.
The monarch called on the National Communication Commission โto intervene in the poor services being rendered by the MTN to Ilawe Ekiti, the third most populous town inย Ekiti Stateโ.
He said, โNo one would quarrel with any company who asks for more money when providing fantastic services to customers, but it will be extortion to increase tariffs for poor servicesโ.
