The 2023-24 season of the English Rugby Premiership – or Gallagher Premiership as it is officially called – is approaching its climax, and the race for the title is heating up.
While the league has slightly fallen out of popularity with fans due to the financial struggles, the on-field competition has managed to remain really fierce. Several teams are in contention, but who are the favorites for this year’s championship? Let’s find out.
1. Saracens
According to basically every bookmaker, the Saracens are currently the favorites, standing the best chance of lifting the Gallagher Premiership trophy come the end of the season in June.
And here’s why that is very interesting. The team was relegated to the RFU Championship for the 2020-21 season, but they returned to the Premiership and immediately started gunning for the trophy.
Their strong squad, boasting England internationals like Owen Farrell and Maro Itoje, is a force to be reckoned with. And when you factor in their well-drilled game plan and depth of experience, it’s difficult to imagine them losing the title race.
2. Northampton Saints
However, surprises always happen in sports, and if there is any team that is qualified to bring that surprise, it would be the Northampton Saints.
The Northampton Saints are no strangers to the Premiership fight, as they have consistently challenged for the title in recent years. Their attack line, under the able leadership of the electric Chris Boyd, is a constant threat.
Sure, their previous Premiership fights did not hand them the title. But this is a new season, and it could be the one when everything turns around for them. Besides, they currently sit at the top of the table, so who says they can’t do it?
3. Bath
Unlike the Saracens and the Northampton Saints, though, Bath does not have a recent history of impressive performances.
However, the new director, Johann Coetzee, has been working miracles on the team. With talented youngsters in their ranks, Bath could actually pull a surprising, but no less deserving, win this year.
4. Bristol Bears
Bristol Bears, is another team that has had to claw its way up from the Championship. And you best believe that they are constantly fighting to show that they deserve the seat that they currently have at the Premiership table.
The team has an impressive attack front, and that underdog story would sound even better if they won the title.
While Saracens, Northampton, Bath, and Bristol are the frontrunners, other teams can’t be discounted.
The Sale Sharks, for instance, might not have that many eyes on them right now, but they have a decent enough squad to make a push for the playoffs in the final lap of the season.
And we can’t discount the Harlequins. It’s easy to see them as just entertaining, but their style of play could be dangerous for their opponents on a good day.
All in all, the battle for the Gallagher Premiership trophy promises to be thrilling until the very end, and who will go home with the trophy is anyone’s guess.
