Citizens Awareness Against Corruption and Social Vices Initiative (CAACASVI) has decried the alleged inaction by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) to curtail pollution in the oil and gas industry.
Led by Comrade Danesi Momoh, the group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to scrutinise the activities of NUPRC under Engr. Gbenga Komolafe.
The group claimed that there is a disturbing weakness and lack of will by NUPRC to fulfil its mandate in ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and laws, as well as overseeing the safety and other regulations related to the exportation and importation of petroleum products into the country.
The group alleged that ongoing gas flares and widespread environmental degradation are causing the government to lose significant revenue due to compromised regulatory oversight, kickbacks, and other pecuniary interests.
The group hinted that it would embark on a peaceful march on June 11, 2024, to the Pilot Gate of the Presidential Villa to submit a petition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The petition will detail allegations of financial misconduct, embezzlement, crass nepotism, favouritism, and a regime of opaqueness in NUPRC.
The group expressed confidence in President Tinubu’s determination to return the country to the right track of sanity, decency, productivity, and economic recovery.
They vowed to push against every obstacle to reach Mr President, knowing fully well that those benefiting from the rot in NUPRC will fight to block them from exposing their dealings and to avert the fury of Mr President.
It noted, “We must open our eyes to the reality of the rot in NUPRC. Enough of the deceit. Engr. Komolafe must be made to step down to allow for a thorough investigation and audit of the Commission. This is a challenge that we must face; an occasion that we have risen to on behalf of Nigerians.
“We appeal for public support to save this important agency from the claws of thievery, ineptitude, opaqueness, nepotism, and a cartel of elite economic scoundrels who are up against Mr. President’s renewed hope agenda.”
