A senior officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Innocent Ogbu, was kidnapped by gunmen along the Lokoja-Enugu road. Ogbu and fifteen other people were abducted on Saturday while riding a commercial bus to Enugu.
According to a statement released by NCoS Niger command spokesperson Rabiu Shuaibu on Monday, Ogbu was going to Enugu for a development course at a correctional training institution.
At Niger State’s Minna Old Medium Security Custodial Center, he serves as the deputy correctional superintendent, as well as the armed squad wing’s unit commander.
“According to the available report, the officer was kidnapped along with 15 fifteen other passengers traveling to Enugu in an 18 seater commercial bus,” Shuaibu said.
“The incident has been reported to relevant security agencies including the police and DSS.”
The kidnappers have contacted the jail official’s family and demanded a ransom of N10 million.
This isn’t the first time a prison official has been abducted in Niger State.
Abdulrahamam Ibrahim Gelele, the controller of corrections of the Niger State Correctional Center, was abducted by gunmen in April along the Ilorin-Minna route.
