The traditional rulers of Nigeria’s rich cultural landscape represent the enduring spirit of their people. Among them, His Royal Majesty, Emmanuel Efeizomor II, the Obi of Owa, stands out as a symbol of leadership, wisdom, and progress. Ruling Owa Kingdom in Delta State for over five decades, Obi Efeizomor has successfully blended tradition with modernity, offering his people guidance and his kingdom global visibility. His reign, filled with pivotal moments, has significantly contributed to the well-being and development of his community. This insightful piece celebrates not just a king, but a visionary leader who has devoted his life to his people’s advancement and prosperity.
Owa Kingdom, nestled in Delta State, boasts a rich history and vibrant cultural heritage. For centuries, the Owa monarchy has been a pivotal force in maintaining peace, stability, and growth within the kingdom. The position of Obi is not just ceremonial; it is deeply entrenched in the daily lives of the Owa people, serving as a source of spiritual, cultural, and political leadership.
Obi Emmanuel Efeizomor II ascended to the throne at a time when traditional institutions were being tested by modernisation and colonial legacies. Since becoming Obi in 65 years ago, he has been a stabilising force, ensuring that the values of Owa’s ancestors continue to flourish while adapting to the demands of the contemporary world. His reign has ensured that the monarchy remains relevant in the 21st century, an era where many traditional institutions are struggling to maintain significance.
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, in his congratulatory message to the monarch on his 65th coronation anniversary as contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, extolled the revered traditional ruler as a man of peace who had persevered in providing loving, compassionate and effective leadership to his people.
He stated that Obi Efeizomor, being the immediate past Chairman of the Delta State Traditional Rulers Council, remained a wonderful representation of harmony and peace who had made good use of his position of privilege to benefit both his people and the state as a whole.
The Governor noted that Owa kingdom had experienced a significant and remarkable improvement in human capital and infrastructural development, as well as enduring peace under the reign of the Monarch.
The governor added, “We value your leadership and wise efforts in establishing Delta State as a peaceful state among its people and kingdoms as immediate past Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers.
“As a renowned statesman, peace maker, and patriot, you have made your fair share of contributions to the advancement of both your kingdom and our beloved state.”

From the onset of his reign, Obi Efeizomor II has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the development of his people. Under his leadership, Owa Kingdom has experienced significant growth in areas such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and social welfare. His Majesty’s passion for education, in particular, has been a hallmark of his reign, with many Owa indigenes benefiting from scholarships, educational foundations, and development programs aimed at equipping the youth for a brighter future.
Obi Efeizomor’s belief that education is the cornerstone of progress has been evident in the transformation of the kingdom’s educational infrastructure. Schools have been built, libraries established, and various initiatives launched to support the aspirations of young people in the kingdom. He has often emphasized that the future of Owa rests on the shoulders of well-educated individuals, who can then leverage their knowledge to improve the socioeconomic conditions of the entire community.
In his congratulatory message to the monarch during his 65th Coronation Anniversary, Senator Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, wrote, “My family and I warmly felicitate with the people of Owa Kingdom and our revered monarch, His Royal Majesty, Obi (Dr) Emmanuel Efeizomor II, OON, the Obi of Owa Kingdom, on his 65th coronation anniversary.
“Under his wise leadership, Owa Kingdom has enjoyed unparalleled peace, prosperity, and harmony. We express our deepest gratitude for his selfless service and pray that God grants him many more years of good health, wisdom, and strength to continue leading us.
“May God’s blessings abound upon Owa Kingdom, Ika Nation, and Delta State.”
Beyond education, His Majesty has also been instrumental in improving healthcare services within his kingdom. Recognizing that the well-being of his people is paramount, he has facilitated the establishment of health centers and clinics, ensuring that both urban and rural dwellers have access to basic healthcare services. The king’s interventions in maternal and child health have saved numerous lives, particularly in areas where healthcare services were previously lacking.
Dr. Felix Olumese, a local health officer in Owa, praised the Obi’s contributions: “The establishment of primary healthcare centers in the kingdom has greatly reduced infant mortality rates. His Majesty’s concern for the health of his people, especially women and children, has been exceptional. He always emphasizes that no one should be left behind when it comes to healthcare.”
While Obi Efeizomor II is a forward-thinking ruler, he has never lost sight of the importance of preserving Owa’s cultural heritage. Under his leadership, traditional festivals, rites, and ceremonies have been preserved and celebrated with grandeur. Festivals such as the Iwa Ji (New Yam Festival) remain central to the social calendar of the kingdom, serving not only as a means of cultural preservation but also as an opportunity for communal bonding.
His Majesty has always understood that tradition holds the key to the identity of his people. By maintaining these cultural practices, Obi Efeizomor has fostered unity among his subjects, promoting a sense of pride in their heritage. This has also made Owa a cultural hub within Delta State, attracting visitors and dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond.
“I always look forward to our New Yam Festival,” says Mrs. Ogechi Amadi, a market woman. “It’s not just about the celebration, but about coming together as a community. His Majesty makes sure that we do not forget where we come from, and through these festivals, he reminds us of our roots and our values.”
The Obi of Owa is also known for his extensive knowledge of traditional laws, customs, and spiritual practices. He has, over the years, mediated countless disputes within the kingdom, settling conflicts in ways that reflect the wisdom of his forebears while taking into account the realities of modern society. His role as a peacemaker has earned him respect not only within Owa but also across Delta State and neighboring regions.
One of the defining features of Obi Efeizomor II’s reign is his ability to strike a balance between preserving tradition and embracing modernity. He has been a strong advocate for modernisation, particularly in the areas of technology and business. His Majesty recognizes that for his people to compete on a global scale, they must be equipped with the skills and tools necessary to thrive in a digital economy.
Under his leadership, Owa Kingdom has attracted entrepreneurs and investors, leading to the establishment of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that provide employment opportunities for the youth. His efforts in promoting agriculture, trade, and commerce have transformed Owa into a center of economic activity, with many of his subjects benefiting from these initiatives.
According to Mr. Julius Ikenna, an entrepreneur, “His Majesty’s foresight in creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive has been phenomenal. Many young people, including myself, have been able to start and grow businesses because of the structures he has put in place. He believes in the power of entrepreneurship to change lives.”
Furthermore, the Obi’s partnership with government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and international bodies has opened up numerous opportunities for his people. These partnerships have facilitated access to funds for local farmers, improved infrastructure, and introduced modern agricultural practices that have boosted productivity within the kingdom.
Obi Emmanuel Efeizomor II’s influence extends far beyond the boundaries of Owa Kingdom. As one of the most respected traditional rulers in Nigeria, His Majesty has played an active role in national discourse, offering his wisdom and experience on matters of national importance. He has been a key voice in promoting peace, unity, and coexistence among Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and religious groups.
Perhaps one of the most endearing qualities of Obi Efeizomor II is his deep love for his people. To his subjects, he is not just a ruler, but a father figure who genuinely cares for their well-being. His Majesty’s open-door policy ensures that he is accessible to everyone, regardless of social status or background.
Chief Victoria Nwosu, a community leader, echoes this sentiment: “The Obi is always ready to listen. He doesn’t care whether you are rich or poor, he gives everyone a chance to speak. That’s why we love him—because he treats us like family, and we know he has our best interests at heart.”
