Human rights experts warn the West risks being complicit in Israel’s g*nocide in Gaza. However, that hasn’t stopped key allies arming Tel Aviv with billions of dollars of weapons. The US tops the list, followed by Germany , Italy and the UK, as you’ll see from our slides.
But can those countries really be ignorant of their obligations under international law? Last year’s ruling by the International Court of Justice made clear there was a ‘plausible’ g*nocide taking place. Since then, UN special rapporteur, Francesca Albanese, says states can’t claim they ‘did not know what they were risking to partake in’.
Earlier this year, the European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) filed a lawsuit against the German government to stop arms exports to Israel. In the UK, more than 600 lawyers, academics and retired senior judges wrote a letter to then-PM Rishi Sunak warning his government’s arms shipments were illegal.
Despite the appeals, Western nations continue to flood Israel with weapons that have k*lled over 40,000 Palestinians since October 7, primarily women and children. Over 70,000 tonnes of explosives have been dropped on the Gaza Strip during the bombardment, according to Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor. That’s over four times the amount unleashed by atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. According to the same source, more bombs have rained on Gaza, than were dropped on Dresden, Hamburg and London combined in World War II.
And the complicity doesn’t stop at arms. A new report by OILCHANGE International reveals how oil shipments are literally fuelling the destruction of Gaza. Apart from Western shipments, African countries including Gabon and Nigeria, are also among the main suppliers.
