The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has called on the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to channel more welfare interventions towards junior-ranked officers, stressing their critical role in frontline policing.

According to him, junior officers bear the brunt of operational duties across the country.

A statement on Thursday by the Force spokesman, DCP Anthony Placid, said Disu made the call while receiving the Executive Secretary of the NPTF, Alhaji Mohammed Sheidu, alongside members of the Fund’s Board of Directors during a courtesy visit at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The visit provided an avenue for strategic discussions aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force and the Trust Fund, particularly in advancing ongoing reforms and improving operational effectiveness.

“The IG specifically called on the NPTF to direct targeted welfare programmes at junior-ranked officers, emphasising that those at the lower cadre carry the heaviest operational burdens and deserve structured, consistent support.

“Disu reaffirmed his commitment to building a more responsive, technologically driven, and citizen-focused Nigeria Police Force through the partnership, ” the statement partly read.

He identified personnel welfare as a key priority, noting that improved housing, accessible healthcare, and prompt payment of insurance and welfare benefits are essential to boosting morale, discipline, and efficiency within the Force.

Speaking during the meeting, Sheidu reaffirmed the NPTF’s commitment to supporting the police through sustained and needs-driven interventions in personnel welfare, training, and operational capacity. He highlighted the Fund’s achievements, including the delivery of over 100 training programmes for more than 13,000 officers, execution of over 170 infrastructure projects nationwide, and initiatives in housing, healthcare, and smart policing.

He added that the Fund remains focused on enhancing operational readiness, modernising facilities, and aligning its interventions with the strategic priorities of the Force.

The meeting comes amid ongoing police reforms aimed at improving efficiency, boosting morale, and enhancing service delivery, with increased attention on the welfare needs of officers, especially those in lower ranks who handle frontline duties.
