The Management of the National Orthopedic Hospital, Benin, (NOHB) has pledged to give more priority to the training of staff to promote efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery.

Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Philip Ugbodaga, pledged in a message at a two-week capacity building programme for all its staff as part of management’s efforts to chart a pathway on best practice in line with the hospital’s vision to promote international best practices in healthcare delivery and the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR.

The capacity-building training for the staff, Ugbodaga said, was to enhance skills, improve patient care, and ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards.

According to him, “The mandate of the President is very clear as far as effective and efficient healthcare delivery is concerned. Mr president insists that every Nigerian must feel the positive impact of the reforms in the health sector, and this message is consistently amplified by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare through its 4-point agenda.

“The training serves as a vital template adopted by our management to galvanize every member of staff towards the operationalization of the 5-year strategic plan of the hospital.”

Addressing the staff at the programme, the Director of Clinical Services and Training, Prof Kunle Olawepo, stressed the imperative of teamwork and enjoined every staff member to work collaboratively with each other with a view to providing quality healthcare services to the citizens.

“At the end of this training, you should all leave here with a renewed passion and innovative ideas to deliver the exceptional care that the National Orthopaedic Hospital desires for optimizing patient-centred care.

Over 200 participants drawn from the various departments participated in the programme.

The Director of Administration, Dr Henry Egbon, in his remark, lauded the initiative and noted that a good understanding of the Performance Management System (PMS) was an essential ingredient for career progression in the civil service.

According to him, “Promotion and advancement in the civil service is now more merit-based, and this is geared towards improving performance and productivity in the service.

On his part, the state coordinator of the National Health Insurance Agency in Edo State, Dr Theodore Ehanire, while applauding the efforts of the Medical Director for organizing the programme, described the training as a significant step in the right direction.

Ehanire noted that the training would enhance the staff’s knowledge and service quality offered to patients, urging the participants to take advantage of the programme for self improvement and enhanced performance in service delivery.

Also, a retired Director of Administration at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Jimoh Kadiri, while emphasizing the virtue of good conduct and discipline, enjoined the health practitioners to be dedicated, courageous, and work as a team for effective and quality services to patients.

According to him, “you must be very well acquainted with the ‘bible of the civil service’, the scheme of service, which will guide your overall conduct from your enlistment in the civil service till you retire.

The training programme covered several modules including: NOHB vision, mission and core values, National Action Plan for Health Security in Nigeria (NAPHS): Exploring NHIA’s Journey and Operational Framework for a Sustainable Future; NOHB Organizational Structure, Administrative Policies, Guidelines and Federal Government Circulars; Accounting Procedures and Processes; Overview of Current Pension Scheme; Patient Rights and Responsibilities; Conflict Resolution in the Workplace; Electronic Medical Records in a Digital Healthcare Era etc.

The high point of the training was the official launch of the hospital’s 5-year strategic plan 2024-2029. The plan details the direction the hospital will take, the achievements and outcomes that will be attained, and the interventions that will be undertaken to make sure these targets are met.

It also specifies the roles and responsibilities that all actors involved in the well-articulated plan will have to perform, the implementation challenges that have to be overcome, the monitoring and evaluation required, and the financial resources needed to enable the plan to be successfully implemented within the plan period.
