ABUJA – The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has intensified efforts to deepen ongoing power sector reforms by strengthening regulatory collaboration with the Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) and the Oyo State Electricity Regulatory Commission (OYSERC).
The move formed the focus of separate courtesy visits by the two state regulators to NERC’s headquarters in Abuja, as part of broader initiatives to reinforce federal-state coordination in Nigeria’s evolving electricity market.
During the engagement with KSERC, the Kogi State delegation, led by its Chairman, Ibrahim Abdulwaris, briefed NERC on milestones recorded since the commission’s establishment. Abdulwaris said KSERC had made significant progress in laying the institutional and regulatory groundwork for a functional state electricity market within its first year of operation.
He noted that the commission had prioritised building internal capacity, developing regulatory frameworks and advancing processes necessary to operationalise electricity market activities in the state.
Responding, NERC’s Commissioner for Stakeholder Management, Aisha Mahmud, commended KSERC for what she described as proactive steps toward establishing a credible regulatory foundation.
She stressed the importance of sustained collaboration between the national and state regulators to ensure policy alignment, regulatory consistency and optimal utilisation of energy resources within their respective jurisdictions.
Mahmud emphasised that stronger inter-governmental coordination would enhance electricity generation, promote market growth and consolidate reforms across the country.
