ABUJA – In a strategic move to strengthen ties between Nigeria and Australia in the mining sector, Her Excellency Leilani Bin-Juda, the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals, Dr. Dele Alake.
During the visit, the High Commissioner extended an invitation to Dr. Alake to attend the esteemed African Down Under (ADU) conference, scheduled to take place in Perth, Australia, from September 4th to 6th, 2024.
The invitation was part of a broader discussion focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in the area of mining, where Australia is a global leader.

Known for its vast mineral wealth and cutting-edge mining technology, Australia ranks among the top producers of essential minerals such as iron ore, coal, gold, and bauxite.
The ADU conference is a key event that showcases Australia’s expertise in mining and provides a platform for African nations to engage with industry leaders and explore opportunities for collaboration.

In a statement released by Mr. Segun Tomori, the Special Assistant on Media to the Honourable Minister of Solid Minerals Development, it was revealed that the High Commissioner highlighted the immense benefits that Nigeria could gain from the conference. The discussions between Dr. Alake and HE Bin-Juda also touched on potential training opportunities for Nigerian professionals in mining, which could be facilitated by Australian institutions. These short courses are aimed at boosting the skills and knowledge base of Nigerian experts, thereby contributing to the growth of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
A significant point of discussion was the introduction of a new free platform developed by Geoscience Australia, specifically designed for African nations. This platform, which leverages satellite data, is poised to revolutionize how mining activities are tracked and monitored across the continent. It offers real-time data access and free, high-quality training, which could significantly enhance Nigeria’s capacity to manage and oversee its mining operations.
The High Commissioner, who was accompanied by the Second Secretary of the Australian High Commission, His Excellency Anto Bouckley, reiterated her commitment to fostering stronger bilateral ties. She also expressed her intention to visit Dr. Alake again after the ADU conference, signaling ongoing collaboration between the two nations.
In response, Dr. Alake expressed his gratitude for the invitation and reaffirmed Nigeria’s eagerness to deepen its relationship with Australia, particularly in the solid minerals sector. The Minister emphasized the importance of such international partnerships in driving the development of Nigeria’s mining industry, which holds significant potential for economic growth and diversification.
This visit marks a pivotal moment in Australia-Nigeria relations, setting the stage for enhanced cooperation and shared progress in the mining sector. The forthcoming ADU conference is expected to open new avenues for collaboration, benefiting both nations in their pursuit of sustainable mineral resource management and economic development.
