NOA takes tax reform campaign to Gombe

The National Orientation Agency on Thursday organised a rally in Gombe to educate residents on the benefits of proposed tax reforms, a subject that has stirred public debate across the country.

The walk, which began at the Federal Secretariat and ended at the Cross Roundabout, saw NOA officials distributing handbills to passersby, providing information about the Federal Government’s policy initiatives.

Speaking at the conclusion of the event, the Director of Gombe NOA, Adaline Waye-Patari, emphasised the importance of taxation in driving national development. She noted, however, that concerns over multiple taxation and its impact on low-income earners have necessitated these reforms.

“Taxation is essential for funding national development. But we recognise that it has been a source of concern for many Nigerians due to issues like multiple taxation and its impact on low-income earners.

“To address these challenges, the government is implementing reforms to make the system fairer and less burdensome for citizens,”she said.

Waye-Patari explained that the proposed reforms are encapsulated in four bills designed to consolidate and simplify Nigeria’s tax framework.

“For instance, the Nigeria Tax Bill clearly outlines all major taxes imposed on individuals and companies, as well as the rates. It’s essentially a compendium of taxes charged in Nigeria,” she stated.

“This bill amalgamates existing laws containing tax provisions, and once passed, will repeal 11 such laws.”

The reforms, she added, aim to eliminate instances of multiple taxation by different authorities and ensure fairness in tax obligations.

“Those earning very little will pay little or no taxes, helping them manage their finances better,” she said. “New digital systems are being introduced to make tax payments easier, faster, and more accountable.”

Waye-Patari called on Nigerians to support the reforms, which she said are tailored to reduce the burden on hardworking citizens while ensuring equitable contributions.

“These reforms are designed to ease the burden on hardworking Nigerians while ensuring everyone contributes fairly.

“By supporting this effort, we can create a tax system that works for all and funds the development projects that will improve our nation,” she added.

The rally is part of NOA’s ongoing efforts to raise public awareness about the Federal Government’s tax policy and its potential to foster sustainable development in Nigeria.
