The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kano State Command, has arrested six suspected vandals involved in the illegal removal and theft of railway sleepers in Kiru Local Government Area of the state.

The NSCDC State Commandant, Mohammed Agalama, disclosed this while addressing a news conference at the Command’s headquarters on Wednesday.

“The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kano State Command, wishes to inform the general public of the arrest of six suspected vandals involved in the illegal removal and theft of railway slippers in Kiru Local Government Area of Kano State,” he said.

According to him, the suspects were apprehended by vigilant operatives of the Command following credible intelligence and sustained surveillance operations.

“The individuals were caught in the act of tampering with railway infrastructure, an act which constitutes economic sabotage and poses serious threats to public safety and national development,” he said.

He listed the suspects as Sulaiman Salisu, 45; Musa Aliyu Harisu, 22; Ishaq Alhassan, 20; Isa Aminu, 35; Sadiq Bala, 20; and Mansur Idris, 22, all of them indigenes of Kaduna State.

Agalama said items recovered from the suspects include vandalized railway slippers, 60 nuts of railway slippers  and tools used in carrying out the illegal activity

comprising one 50kg gas cylinder, one 5kg gas cylinder and a 20 metre hose.

He said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects have been engaging in such acts with the intention of selling the materials for personal gain.

The Commandant reiterated the command’s commitment to the protection of critical national assets and infrastructure, which remains a core mandate of the Corps, and warned that any attempt to vandalize government property will be met with decisive legal action.

He said as soon as the investigation was completed, the suspects would be duly prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“The NSCDC Kano State Command remains committed to safeguarding all critical infrastructure and ensuring the security of lives and property in the state,” he added.
