MINNA – Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger state Council has called on security agencies, particularly the police to increase their visibility in parts of the state, Minna the state capital in particular to stem rising security threats.
The journalists in a Communique after the state Congress signed by; George Daniya -Chairman,
Rita Durumi- Secretary Musa Mikail, Communique drafting commiittee, and
Comrade Usman Chiji, the
Council Secretary called for urgent action against criminal elements that have taken over Minna metropolis and environs.
Security situation within the state capital is getting worst by the day, adding that criminals have taken over construction sites like; city gate, kpakungu, Mobil roundabout, Obasanjo shopping complex, central market flyover/Barkin sale where they appear especially at nights, attack their victims with dangerous weapons and disposess them of personal belongings.
“Niger state police command should increase visibility of police personnel within Minna metropolis and environs, along Zuma rock in Suleja, Suleja township, Minna- Kontagora road, and other armed bandits ridden areas of; Mariga, Rafi, Munya, and Shiroro local government areas to reduce incessant attacks on soft targets and travelers”.
Government should also look into the root causes of the incessant accidents along the Suleja-Izom road that have claimed so many lives while the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) should equally station its men at the bad spots for effective traffic control.
The Congress which extensively deliberated on issues that would ensure peaceful co-existence among the diverse ethnic nationalities commended Governor Mohammed Umar Bago for his developmental initiatives.
They also called for proper monitoring and supervision of on-going road construction projects to ease difficulties residents face getting access and move seamlessly through the roads.
In view of the ongoing roads constructions within Minna metropolis especially, the union wants contractors handling the diffrent road constructions to provide alternative routes before blocking the existing ones, and in addition ensure accelerated work on the ongoing projects.
