The terrible accident that happened at Ohafia, Abia State, on Sunday has left several passengers who boarded a bus on their way to celebrate the yuletide season dead.
The accident occurred on the Bende-Abam-Ohafia road near the crumbling Mmuri Bridge. When it fell on a 10-seater bus carrying passengers, the truck carrying construction supplies was attempting to avoid a collapsed section of the fatal bridge.
Despite the efforts of Ohafia teenagers and other supporters to use human resources to rescue the trapped passengers, the accident’s impact buried them beneath the big truck.
The youths’ attempts at rescue were thwarted, nevertheless, by the truck’s weight and its contents.
From beneath the bus, some of the passengers could be heard muttering in low tones for assistance. Among the imprisoned victims were two youngsters on a Christmas vacation with their mother.
According to Ukpai Onuoha, an Ohafia native, the bridge has been in poor shape for a long time, leading to mishaps and other problems. He blamed politicians in Abia State for their broken pledges to repair the bridge.
The Federal Road Safety Commission(FRSC),is yet to release an official report on the incident that would establish the total number of victims.
