The Ogun State Police Command has detained a 20-year-old man called Faisal Audu in relation to the purported murder of a hunter in the Sagamu area by the name of Saheed Awolesi.
Officers from the Sagamu Police Division made the arrest on Sunday.
Omolola Odutola, the spokesperson for the state command, stated that Awolesi had allegedly gone night hunting on October 5, 2024, about 9:00 p.m., but had not returned home. Following his disappearance , the victim’s family and the hunters’ group began a frenzied search for him.
According to Odutola, members of the Ibafo Police Command have detained the suspect connected to the hunter’s disappearance, as well as the hunter’s motorcycle and phone.
She said, “Our detectives called the hunter’s mobile number, and it was answered at the Ibafo Police Station. The suspect had already been apprehended by officers from the division and was found in possession of the hunter’s phone and motorcycle.
“A jackknife, a cutlass, and a mobile phone suspected to have been stolen were found in his possession. The suspect was later handed over to the Igbeba Police Division for further investigation.
“During interrogation, the suspect confessed to killing Awolesi and stealing his motorcycle and mobile phone. He led officers to the crime scene, where the victim’s body was discovered, bearing signs of violent injuries.”
The spokesperson added that the body had been recovered and taken to a mortuary in Sagamu for an autopsy as part of the ongoing investigation.
A similar incident was reported by PUNCH Metro in 2022, when suspected gunmen killed a motorcyclist, identified as Ashimiu Lawal, and stole his motorcycle in the Leme area of Abeokuta South Local Government Area of the state.
