The Bauchi State Police Command has reported the recovery of 95 vandalized rail tracks and the arrest of a suspect linked to the crime.
SP Ahmed Wakil, the command’s spokesperson, made this announcement on Thursday in Bauchi.
According to him, the command’s operatives, acting on reliable information, detained a 29-year-old suspect whose name has not been disclosed and retrieved the stolen items.
“The suspect conspired with another, now at large, to vandalise critical rail track components.
“The incident occurred on September 24, at approximately 11 pm, in the vicinity of Inkil Quarters in the Bauchi metropolis,” he said.
Wakil mentioned that the police have increased surveillance efforts to locate the other perpetrator, emphasizing that damaging rail lines endangers public safety and undermines the national economy.
He highlighted that the rail line connected the Inkil community to Gombe State, aiding in trade and transportation.
Wakil also stated that Commissioner of Police Auwal Musa commended the partnership between the police and the metal scrap dealers association, which resulted in the suspect’s arrest.
“This achievement underscores the Command’s dedication to safeguarding public assets and ensuring citizens’ safety through collaborative community efforts,” he said.
He encouraged the state’s residents to alert security agencies about any suspicious activities or individuals they may come across.
