ABUJA – The House of Representatives has inaugurated an ad-hoc committee to investigate the Federal Government’s implementation strategy for the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) policy nationwide.
At the inauguration ceremony held in Abuja on Friday, Chairman of the committee, Hon. Ahmadu Jaha (APC-Borno), said the panel has been tasked with assessing the effectiveness, safety, and long-term sustainability of the CNG programme in Nigeria.
He emphasised the importance of ensuring equity in the rollout of CNG conversion centres, stressing that facilities must be fairly distributed across all six geo-political zones.
“The committee is committed to doing everything within its powers to ensure a balanced and just spread of CNG centres across the country,” Jaha stated.
He further assured that the panel will collaborate with relevant ministries, regulatory agencies, oil and gas companies, and other stakeholders to align the CNG policy with international standards and best practices.
He said, “We will critically examine the existing legal and regulatory frameworks guiding the implementation of the CNG initiative, and propose necessary legislative interventions to the House for consideration.”
Jaha also encouraged committee members to remain guided by the terms of reference outlined in the House votes and proceedings to shape a focused and effective work plan.
It would be recalled that in May 2025, the House adopted a motion titled “Call to Establish More Compressed Natural Gas Conversion Centres across Nigeria,” urging the Federal Government to ensure inclusive and equitable access to CNG infrastructure for all Nigerians.
The 11-member investigative panel was formally inaugurated by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, on Thursday.
