The Rivers State government has confirmed two cases of the Mpox virus within the state. This announcement was made by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Oreh, during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, August 20.
Dr. Oreh revealed that the state’s Public Health Emergency Operations Centre has been placed on high alert to effectively manage any potential outbreaks.
“According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), there are 39 confirmed cases of Mpox nationwide. Rivers State accounts for two of these cases. Our medical teams are on standby at both general and specialist hospitals to respond to any emergencies,” she stated.
To combat the spread of the virus, the state government has implemented an incident management plan and mobilized resources to track and manage all reported cases across the state. Additionally, the Ministry of Health has recruited and trained temporary staff to strengthen the response efforts.
“Our ad hoc staff are now equipped to handle this infection at all levels of healthcare,” Oreh added.
