The United Nations (UN) has again predicted that 82 million Nigerians, about 64 per cent of the country’s population, might go hungry by 2030.
Consequently, the UN advised the Federal Government to tackle climate change, pest infestations, and other threats to agricultural productivity.
This is just as the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), has said Nigeria’s food inflation rate hit a record high of 40.66 per cent in May 2024, surpassing the previous month’s 40.53 increase.
Statistics apart, it is not only evident but also apparent the country’s rising food prices and fuel scarcity are threatening the survival of ordinary Nigerians.
It is not price at which you bought food items or indeed other commodities yesterday that you buy today.
All hands must therefore, be on deck to address the anomaly, or we perish.
One of the ways to tackle food shortage is to start what I may call backyard or frontyard farming.
This involves utilising that space lying fallow in your place of abode for agricultural production.

This is expedient because bandits have taken over the farmlands. You can mitigate the adverse effect of food crisis currently ravaging our country by taking a step in this manner.
Believe me, there are many agribusinesses you can do in a small space. For instance, you can plant vegetables such as fluted pumpkin (ugu), ewedu, okro, bitter leaf, scent leaf, tomatoes, pepper, potatoes, plantain, banana as the case may be in that your compound.
You can as well rear poultry – chicken, turkey, duck, geese, guinea fowl, etc. You can also embark on rearing goats, rabbits, pigs, grass. cutter or dogs (exotic ones) or you can build fish ponds and begin to rear fish.
There are a lot of benefits you will derive from embarking on one, two, three of these ventures. You can even embark on integrated farming, combining two or more Taking these proactive measures will reduce your over reliance on external sources for your family food supply in this time of food crisis.
Your family will be enjoying balanced diets and reduced bills for food items.
Your family will stay healthy and spend less on medical bills because they would be eating fresh, proteinous and organic foods.
If you do things well, you can even go commercial and create jobs for yourself and your loved ones.
Take proactive measures now. Do not wait for government to come to your aid. Do not allow yourself or your families to be consumed by the impeding food crisis.
If you need help, or an e-book guide on any of the above ventures, call me on phone.
