The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), On Monday managed to extract three people who were still alive from the debris of a four-story building that fell in Abuja.
In a statement released in Abuja on Tuesday, the department’s acting director-general, Mrs. Florence Wenegieme, stated that no lives were lost in the event.
According to Wenegieme, the structure that collapsed was situated at 23 Nkwere Street, which is off Ahmadu Bello Way in Area 11, Garki in the Federal Capital Territory.
The patients were brought to the hospital, treated, and then released, according to the DG.
She stated that at approximately 8:20 p.m. on Monday, FEMD received a distress call regarding the building’s collapse over the department 112 emergency toll-free line. The structure was undergoing renovations at the time.
The Department of Development Control, FCT Fire Service, Federal Fire Service, Julius Berger Fire Service, and National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were reportedly immediately notified, according to her.
The Garki Divisional Police Command was already on the ground, the acting D-G said, and CGC Construction Company was also activated to provide help.
She further mentioned that when the structure collapsed, other construction workers were outside.
“Although no life was lost to the incident, developers and individuals should strictly adhere to building codes at all times and engage only professional builders and engineers.
“Developers should also carry out integrity tests on existing buildings before carrying out renovations and use only standard building materials,” she said.
