We adore these iconic and unseen images of the legendary Nigerian photographer J.D Okhai Ojekere curated as part of the Special Projects at the 10th anniversary of ART X Lagos (@artxlagos). Titled “An Exacting Eye,” the exhibition, as well as a masterclass taught by his son Amaize Ojeikere, sought to honor the life and work of one of the country’s most prolific documentary photographers.

From intimate portraits to iconic hairstyles, Ojekere’s photographs chart Nigeria’s cultural identity across generations, celebrating the vernacular life of Lagos and beyond. Spanning over six decades, his photographs expanded our understanding of art, and exemplified both art’s power and the artist’s role in bearing witness to their time.
