Oghenekaro Peter Etebo, the former Super Eagles midfielder, has shared the reasons behind his choice to sign with the Turkish second-division team, Genclerbirligi.
Etebo, 28, surprised many with his move to the Red and Black this summer.
Despite offers from Israel and top-tier Turkish clubs, the determined midfielder opted to join the humble side.
Having faced nearly a year-long injury setback, the ex-Warri Wolves player made this significant decision to revive his career.
Etebo underwent training at Genclerbirligi’s facilities during his recovery from the injury.
The player disclosed that the club granted him access to their training amenities without requiring anything in return.
The kindness he experienced, along with the connection formed with the coaching team, played a significant role in his choice to join the club.
“A lot of people were calling me, asking, ‘Why would you go to a second division club in Turkey?” Etebo said in an interview with SportsBoom.com.
“From January till the end of the season, I didn’t pay for anything, and I trained with the group — 100 per cent.
“The coach told me: ‘Etebo, I’d tell you something, even before you sign for any team, or before you go anywhere. Just remember that these guys are the ones that looked after you. So, it’s very important.”
